Our beliefs and opinions may have deeper underpinnings than apparent at first glance. When we are conflicted within ourselves, or in conflict with others, an honest exploration of the values we hold dear may help us find a much more satisfactory solution that leads to more fulfilling relationships.

It may seem odd that what seems to be a relatively minor dispute or disagreement can have such an emotionally challenging effect upon the parties involved. However, when we explore more deeply why we are experiencing such distress under any given circumstance, we may find that it is touching upon core beliefs that have moral implications to us.

Workplace disputes I have experienced led me to discover that I felt the organization’s treatment of employees felt immoral regarding Fairness, Oppression, and Authority. On a scale between the concepts of Fairness/Cheating. Liberty/Oppression, and Authority/Subversion, I engaged with my own struggle to find a balance and to act according to my moral convictions. My effectiveness improved as I tried to view the situations form new perspectives. Yet I found the lines I felt should not be crossed by either the organization or myself.

Journaling helped me see as well as hear my self-talk. The kinesthetic aspect of writing down my grievances and my solutions helped me “embody” my beliefs and values. Using the Speaking Circle format in person and alone allowed me to find if what I said rang true or if there was a dissonance to what I told myself and others about the situation.

The “Why” things matter so much to me continues to be the driving force for Express Ways. My hope is to offer you a way forward to a more fulfilling life full of satisfying relationships.
